Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash
(2008)

 Reporting by Keyan Reid

Much like my treatment for Sun Kil Moon, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks’ latest release, Real Emotional Trash, has been sitting in my “to-do” pile for months now. And again like Sun Kil Moon, it’s because I am so unengaged by this album in any positive light that I’ve found it all too easy to push it away time and time again.

I don’t know. Maybe somebody out there is all into this stuff. And if so, great. This album isn’t a total throw away then. But it is for me. It isn’t so bad that I feel compelled to talk shit on it, but man, this album couldn’t stir up the slightest bit of feeling out of yours truly.

Stephen Malkmus’ running-gibberish lyrics and meandering butt-rock just offered no allure to me whatsoever. The whole affair sounds like some lame attempt at psychedelic classic rock with no natural flow or grace. The lyrics feel forced while the music seems aimless. It’s reminiscent of a child aping the actions of an adult – you can see the underlying themes in it all, but the end product is quite distinctly different, and goofy.

Suffice it to say that I don’t really respect this album. At all. The whole thing just seemed dumb to me. There were no ‘one-hit wonders’ on the album or anything that I could take away with it. With this review done, I plan to never listen to this thing again. It just did absolutely nothing for me.
