Robyn - Robyn (2008 US Bonus Tracks Edition)
(2008)

 Reporting by Keyan Reid

Boo. Lame. Boo-lame.

Depending on where and what you read about music, you may have heard a bunch of unwavering praise for Robyn. Hailing from Europe, many folks have claimed that Robyn is the antithesis of Britney Spears within the pop music scene. Supposedly, she’s smart, responsible, and takes this whole music business seriously. But while Robyn may not sound or act anything like Britney, her music sucks just as bad, if not worse.

There are so many things wrong with this album that I don’t even know where to start. The forced wannabe gangsta lyrics are cringe-worthy, and they permeate every track like a rampaging cancer. The thoroughly synthesized music is uninspired, even for dance-pop stuff such as this. And the heavy-handed self-aggrandizement mixed in with tepid, convoluted attempts at showing a fragile, human side to Robyn are all shallow and emphatically phony.

This is disposable music from a disposable artist immersed in a disposable culture. I don’t know how else to really put it. There is nothing of significance or value here whatsoever. There’s no saving grace or redeeming quality. You could purge this album from history and it would affect nothing.
