Nick Cave - Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!
(2008)

 Reporting by Keyan Reid

Depending on your sources, there’s a chance you have already heard of this album. Ol’ Nick Cave here and his Bad Seeds are an old school act, and their return to center stage got more than a few people excited. If I may cut to the quick however, that is exactly where much of the praise is coming from. Everybody seems to have thought that Nick and the Bad Seeds were done, and the fact that he showed up with a weighty little album has folks singing his praises.

Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!! is by no means a bad album. Its got some catchy and humorous moments to it that I definitely enjoyed. But when I stop to think about whether this is the kind of album I would recommend to others or look to play during a party, the answer is simply no.

Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!! is a strange beast. It’s veritably the telling of the story of “Larry” in an almost spoken-word format, and in so doing, the album stops being an album per se and becomes more akin to an audio book, or something of that nature. One that has all sorts of rock jam going on behind it, but yeah, it’s still the forthright telling of a story above all else. And while this is an intriguing concept that will hook you to a degree, it’s also the failure of the album as a traditional musical work. The importance placed on telling the story leaves the songs to carry a burden instead of flowing melodically.

As a man who is very much into stories, I appreciated what these guys were doing here. It is a fun, kinda cool album, and I can’t say by any stretch that I’m sorry that I listened to it. But, undeniably, the appeal is limited and esoteric. You can’t just throw this album on and expect everyone to groove to it. You have to listen to the story throughout the tracks and take it with the dose of rock they supply it with and just say, “Thanks. That was cool. It was…..an experience.” And that’s where you leave it.
